Yesterday Newton travelled to Plymouth to play their last match of 2025. Newton knew this match would be difficult as their opposition were the University of Plymouth 1s who are currently undefeated at the top of the league.
Newton started well putting pressure on Plymouth but were under a lot of pressure with the defence and midfield having to work hard to keep Plymouth out. Erin Pettican, Jenna Disbury and Sophie Gregory worked well together shifting the ball up the pitch to help launch Newton's own attacks catching Plymouth on the break. Plymouth continued to work hard to try and break through but Newton held firm with player of the match Rosie Carpenter making several key saves meaning the teams headed into halftime 0-0.
Going into the second half Newton knew they would be under increased pressure as they could tell that had grown Plymouth frustrated and did not want this game to end goalless. Newton's defence and midfield continued to work hard with Nancy Ellis and Nikki Hobbs breaking up the pitch to threaten Plymouth's goal. Plymouth were eventually able to break through just bobbling the ball over the line from short corners.
The game ended 2-0 to Plymouth but Newton were pleased with their performance and are excited for the second half of the season in 2026!
