Yesterday the team travelled through stormy conditions to Plymouth to face up against Devonport 1s.
Both teams started brightly with the game moving from end to end. Newton made some lovely moves up the pitch with some slick passing between Meg Smale, Harriet Ellis, Nikki Hobbs and Frankie Thompson putting pressure on Devonport's defence. Devonport held strong though and moved up the pitch to launch their own attack but were equally held back by Sara Ellis, Jane Carr and player of the match Erin Pettican (making her debut in defence). The game continued end to end with both teams having chances to get ahead with Devonport denied shortly before half time by a fantastic stick save from Rosie Carpenter in goal! The teams headed into the break 0-0 🤯
Heading into the second half Newton wanted to carry on as they started. Newton absorbed some early pressure from Devonport and began an attack of their own with Nancy Ellis linking up with Meg, Harriet and Frankie launching forward to put Devonport under pressure but were once again kept out by some fab defending. It was Devonport who broke the deadlock, managing to score from a short corner. Newton were not to be kept down though and pushed for an equaliser with Nikki firing the ball just millimetres wide.
Some late drama for Newton as they were once again pushing forward and with only minutes to go Frankie fell awkwardly on the slick pitch and broke her wrist. 😱
The game ended 1-0 to Devonport and we all send Frankie well wishes and can't wait to see her back on the pitch when she's healed up. 💕
