Last Saturday Newton travelled down to Cornwall to face Caradon. This was an important match for Newton and they were looking to come away with some points on the board.
Newton started quickly, catching Caradon off guard and earned themselves a short corner in the opening two minutes, this was converted by Nancy Ellis giving Newton an early lead! Caradon pushed back against this moving the ball well and putting Newton under pressure but couldn't get past Jenna Disbury, Sophie Gregory and Sara Ellis in defence. The game became end to end with both teams having chances but it was Newton who broke through with Nancy scoring from another short corner! Caradon were able to get one back before half time sending Newton into the break 2-1 up.
Heading out into the second half Newton were hoping to extend their lead but Caradon were pushing hard looking for an equaliser, the game was end to end with player of the match Harriet Ellis, Nikki Hobbs and Mandy Isherwood fighting in the midfield to help Newton maintain control, with the game remaining 2-1 to Newton despite some great efforts by both teams. The game took a turn with 14 minutes remaining as one of Newton's players sustained a serious injury and the game was paused. Newton gathered themselves to continue and were now playing for their teammate and wanting to retain their lead for her. However, the drama did not end there - with 3 minutes remaining Caradon were awarded a penalty flick! Newton didn't need to worry though as Rosie Carpenter once again became a wall for Newton and kept Caradon out. Newton were now battling for everything trying to maintain their slim lead, however, heart break for Newton as in the dying seconds of the game Caradon equalised to end the game 2-2.
