Newton travelled down to Plymouth today to finally play Devonport 2s after two delays thanks to storms Bert and Darragh.
Newton started on the offence pushing towards Devonport’s goal but were rebuffed by some solid defending. It soon became a battle of the midfield as both teams battled it out for possession with Harriet Ellis, Nikki Hobbs and player of the match Nancy Ellis working well together to create chances.
Some great link up play between Mandy Isherwood and Aimee Scott led to some chances in the D for Newton but once again were held back by Devonport’s defence. Newton’s defence were themselves called into action as Devonport broke through but were kept out by some fabulous saves by Rosie Carpenter and we went into halftime 0-0.
After the break Newton came out looking to break the deadlock, once again Newton started to pile on the pressure but were unable to break through. Devonport once again went up the pitch but were held back by Frankie Thompson who was moonlighting in midfield and our dynamic duo Sara Ellis and Jenna Disbury. The battle continued with both teams having chances, Newton started to ramp up the pressure but ran out of time as the game ended 0-0.
Our first draw of the season and we remain unbeatenand top of the league.
