Newton hosted their first home game of 2025 today against Ocean City. Coming off a 0-0 draw last week Newton were keen to once again find the back of the goal.
Newton started the game with intent and pushed forward to apply pressure to Ocean City, OC did well to absorb this and returned the favour to Newton putting early pressure on Newton's defence and midfield but OC were kept at bay by some great defensive work from Jenna Disbury and player of the match Maya Gough who put in some strong tackles.
Newton upped the pressure and some lovely link up play through the midfield between Meg Smale and Harriet Ellis led to a period of pressure around the attacking D for Newton. OC were firm in their defence with their keeper making some key saves before Nikki Hobbs managed to squeeze a shot through the defence and into the bottom corner, giving Newton a deserved lead!
Newton kept up this intensity when the game restarted and soon earned themselves a short corner, after an initial shot was saved on the line Newton were awarded a penalty flick. Aimee Scott stepped up and cooly slotted it past the keeper - sending Newton 2-0 up at halftime.
Coming out into the second half Newton were looking to up the momentum knowing that there were more goals to have in this game. Nancy Ellis, Nikki and Harriet combined well through the midfield to up the pressure with Meg making some excellent runs down the right hand side keeping the pressure on OCs defence throughout. After a number of forays into OC's D Newton broke the deadlock with a brilliant ball in from Meg which was finished by Frankie Thompson adding to her goal tally for the season!
Still hungry for more Newton kept powering forward, trying to stretch OC's defence and breakthrough their wall. As the game was reaching its final moments Newton won another short corner, Newton once again had the final say of the game with Nancy firing home to end the game 4-0 to Newton!
