Newton made the short trip over to Torquay today to face off against their old rivals Torbay. The game started quickly with the play moving end to end with both teams working hard to try and break the deadlock. Newton were first to do this with joint player of the match Nancy Ellis firing the ball into the back of Torbay's goal! 😎
Newton used this momentum to continue to push forward with Nikki Hobbs, Harriet Ellis and Frankie Thompson linking up and moving the ball quickly up the pitch creating problems for Torbay. Torbay fought back and made a break for it themselves, winning a short corner. Torbay capitalised on this and scored bringing the score to 1-1. However, Newton responded in kind earning themselves a short corner only a few minutes later with Nancy once again finding the back of the goal, sending us into halftime 2-1 up! 👊
Coming out into the second half Newton knew Torbay were going to be harder to break down. Torbay came out fighting but were held back by Newton's defence with Sara Ellis and Jenna Disbury showing off their skills and joint player of the match Maya Gough putting in a solid defensive performance (even after sliding into the fence in pursuit of the ball) 🤕
Once again the play was end to end, with Newton and Torbay both breaking away only to be blocked by the respective defence. This time, however, it was Torbay that broke through the deadlock - once again being awarded a short corner which they converted.
The game ended 2-2 with Newton remaining unbeaten and still top of the league! 🤩
